Free Membership for Young People

In an unprecedented move, the Green Party is offering free membership to people under 30 or in full-time education.  Any student or young person who applies to join the Green Party before 1 January 2011 will pay no subscription for the coming year.

Greens Defend Nailsworth Youth Centre

Green Party members were out in Nailsworth on Saturday 27th November, distributing their anti-cuts leaflet (see this site) and collecting signatures for a challenge to the County Council’s decision to close the town’s professionally led Youth Centre.

Stroud District Council wins top green award

Huge congratulations this is a significant award for measures that Greens have been pushing for locally. However as Jonathon Porritt said at the award ceremony we need to go much further: this is only a small step to where we need to go. It is vital we scale-up energy efficiency and renewables work.

Nailsworth Greens Call For Town Meeting

Today local members and supporters of the Green Party have exercised their right to summon a Town Meeting in Nailsworth. They used a little known provision of the Local Government Act 1972, which allows six or more local electors to require the Town Council to hold a public meeting to consult the whole town.

Green MEP Raises EU Funding Abuse Costing Andover Jobs

One of Britain’s leading Green politicians today criticised the way EU funding can be used to help companies move jobs away from areas where they are badly needed. Keith Taylor, was speaking of the use of EU regional development funds (ERDF) by Twinings Tea to transfer jobs out of the UK to a new factory in Poland.

Green Party County Councillor for Stroud East, Sarah Lunnon, is meeting on Friday 26th Novemeber with Neil Carmicheal MP, to discuss energy security.  Cllr Lunnon is keen to understand the Stroud MP’s position on renewable technologies and the proposed massive expansion of Nuclear at Oldbury.

Council Cuts Devastating

17th November 2010

Stroud Greens have discussed their anger at the County Council and their opposition to them. 

Cllr John Marjoram believes the cuts are politically motivated, “These cuts show the government is trying to break up our social fabric.  Welfare and public spending are the hardest hit and in the Stroud District, this will mean a reduction in road safety, bus services, library services and flood defences.”
